Is reviewing more movies cheating on getting out more blog posts? Yes. But here are the rest of the movies I’ve seen in the latter half of January:

Escape Room

I love a good scary movie. Unfortunately, there don’t seem to be a lot of genuinely scary movies to enjoy. Escape Room is very middle of the road. Not a bad film, but not really a must see either. Kind of a baby’s first Saw or Final Destination. I probably would have enjoyed it more if not for the franchise making ending.

Green Book

I knew there was some controversy surrounding this film, although I didn’t know the specifics going in. I should also point out I’ve never seen Driving Miss Daisy. With all that in mind, it was a pretty damn good film. Mahershala Ali and Viggo Mortensen transformed into their characters and gave spectacular performances, especially Ali. I am glad to see him getting roles that show off his range. It’s not perfect, and it’s obvious it was written by Tony’s son, but it’s still a great story. Would be nice to get a movie about black people that didn’t focus on how much it sucks to be black, though.

I had heard mixed reviews about Glass, which is probably standard for any M. Night Shyamalan film. It didn’t go where I was expecting (duh) and I couldn’t stand Sarah Paulson’s character, but all in all it was very entertaining. Anyone who enjoyed Unbreakable and Split, would be hard pressed to not enjoy Glass as well. Conversely, if you hated the first two, number three won’t be much better.

A Star Is Born

I put off seeing this film because I’m not a big fan of musicals or song heavy movies. I probably watched The Bodyguard way too many times as a kid. I also am tired of the countless remakes. But everyone who saw it seemed to love it so I caved to peer pressure. And you know what? Gosh dangit it’s a really good film. Music’s good, acting’s good, it has Sam Elliott, and satisfying plot.

Okay well. Not a good movie. It had potential, maybe, but that’s me being generous. Anne Hathaway’s performance was… Bad. Bad enough to drag the plot down with her. Not that it needed much to sink.

    1. It’s only because I joined this rewards program at this theater chain, so I can see three movies a week for free. ?
